I think it is safe to say that Gibson Les Paul and Fender Stratocaster guitars played through Marshall/Fender/Vox amplifiers produce the most prevalent sounds in Classic Rock.
Of course, there are plenty exceptions to the rule, as players seek out equipment to produce the sound they hear in their head.
Minimalists such as Angus Young and Paul Kossoff prefer to plug their guitar straight into an amp, whereas sonic experimenters like Jimi Hendrix and David Gilmour will use a range of effects pedals to sculpt their sound.
